EBM Technology
Basic principles of wide-area electron beam irradiation (PIKA)
In general the surface of a metal mould is finished by hand polishing, after milling and / or EDM, to attain high shape accuracy and ensure top quality surface finish. This process requires special technical skills and is time consuming, therefore Sodick has created an alternative and more efficient method.
A new finishing process of wide-area electron beam irradiation has been created for metal moulds. New technology enables EBM irradiation using high energy density without the need for beam concentration. Wide area EBM with up to 600mm diameter is now possible. Furthermore no additional tools or electrodes are required, therefore costs are reduced.
Examples of EBM Polishing
EBM is ideal for the irradiation of complex shapes.

The side of a part, up to 10mm in height, can also be polished.

Metal mould for rib shape
The rib shape can be irradiated to a depth of 10mm.
EBM polishing ensures a uniform surface finish without any distortion.
