Conventional ball-screw driven machines lose much of their original accuracy in about 3 – 5 years due to the periodical deterioration caused by ball-screw wear.  To maintain the original accuracy, replacing the ball-screw is required which costs a lot. Customers today demand higher-speed and higher-precision manufacturing, machines and run them more frequently, resulting in quicker wear of the ball-screw and thus more frequent changes.

Since 1999 Sodick machines have been driven by contact-free linear-motor drives.
